It was a slow week at my mailbox but I did get a couple of titles that I am excited to read. The Triumph of Deborah by Eva Etzioni-HalevyProduct Description from Amazon:
"The richly imagined tale of Deborah, the courageous Biblical warrior who saved her people from certain destruction
In ancient Israel, war is looming. Deborah, a highly respected leader, has coerced the warrior Barak into launching a strike against the neighboring Canaanites. Against all odds he succeeds, returning triumphantly with Asherah and Nogah, daughters of the Canaanite King, as his prisoners. But military victory is only the beginning of the turmoil, as a complex love triangle develops between Barak and the two princesses.
Deborah, recently cast off by her husband, develops a surprising affinity for Barak. Yet she struggles to rebuild her existence on her own terms, while also groping her way toward the greatest triumph of her life.
Filled with brilliantly vivid historical detail, The Triumph of Deborah is the absorbing and riveting tale of one of the most beloved figures in the Old Testament, and a tribute to feminine strength and independence."
I love historical fiction anyway and as I have stated, after reading The Red Tent I discovered a new interest in Biblical themed fiction. I can't wait to sink into this one. Thanks Wendy! The Hiding Place By Trezza Azzopardi
Book Description from aNobii:
"This exceptional debut novel about family, love, and the innocence and terror of childhood has caused an absolute sensation, garnering no less than eleven leading publishers around the world. Set in a Maltese immigrant community in Cardiff, Wales, and peopled with sharp-edged, luminously drawn characters, The Hiding Place is the story of Frankie Gauci, his wife Mary, and their six daughters and about Frankie's betrayal, gambling away his family's livelihood and eventually the family itself. Written in magical language buoyed by grace, it is a mesmerizing exploration of how family, like fire, can shift suddenly from something that provides light and warmth to a dangerous conflagration, sparing no one in its path. The Gaucis' story is seen through the eyes of Dolores, the youngest daughter and, in her father's estimation, the embodiment of bad luck, condemned to bear the mark of a family that is rapidly singeing at the edges. With a lyricism that belies the horrors she so often recounts ("children burnt and children bartered: someone must be to blame"), Dolores presents an unsparing portrayal of the fear and hopelessness of childhood amid grim poverty and neglect, of children growing up without safety nets and on sunken foundations. The Hiding Place conjures the coarse sensuality of life among the docks, the smoky cafes and bars, the crumbling homes and gambling rooms of Tiger Bay. Sustained by a tightrope tension and combining the stark, youthful wisdom and the uncanny, perfect pitch of Susan Minot's Monkeys with the redemptive liveliness of the downtrodden in Angela's Ashes, The Hiding Place is a breathtaking, radiant debut."
This book was also a Booker Prize short-listed book. I have heard that it is a bit dark and emotional but I enjoy a good cry. :D
I know have a question for anyone who wishes to respond. What would you do if you entered a giveaway and won a book but never received it? And I mean after you have of course waited a more than reasonable amount of time for shipping (like two months). Since it was basically a gift would you just forget about it or would you email the giveaway sponsor and let them know that it has been two months and the book never arrived? Curious minds want to know.
UPDATE***
I am leaving the quesion up because the replies offer great advise if anyone finds themself in this situation.....but in my case I double checked and realized that I think there was a publisher mix up. The giveaway was one of those where the book was to be sent by the publisher. I remember receiving a book I know I never asked for about the time I should have received the book I won. I'm just going to call it even, I don't want to bother the great host with an issue they can't fix.

The Hiding Place sounds good, I must read that.
As to your question, I have the same problem and after emailing twice with a polite reminder and being ignored I don't know what to do either. It's been two and a half months and she's still blogs regularly but refuses to respond, even to say she will send the book eventually. I suspect there's not a thing we can do about it and they know it. Sorry it happened to you too.
I won a book in a giveaway several months ago and never received it. I can't email or anything, because I can't remember who I won it from. If I hosted a giveaway and the winner never received the book, I would want to know.
I enjoyed The Trimph of Deborah and am sure you will too. Good book!
As for the other, maybe the email isn't working? Have you tried contacting her via a comment on the blog? Just a thought - sometimes I'm not as up on the email as I'd like to be.
Was it from me? B/c I feel like I'm terrible at getting the books out in time and don't mind a nudge.
I just always have all manner of mishaps at the post office. :)
Sandra, sorry that happened. Most people are really great about shipping though- you for example! :D
Bermudaonion- LOL, I have received books that I couldn't remember where I won it (real names on envelopes make it hard to guess):D
Michele- good tip, I know my old email gave me fits, but in this case I haven't emailed the person yet. I didn't want to come across "pushy".
Amy- LOL, I posted an update. It turns out I think this was a publisher's mix up so no, you can breath easy :D
After reading The Red Tent I was interested in biblical based HF as well, but a couple of average reads fixed that for me! I am definitely thinking it might be time to give another one a go!
I'll usually send an e-mail to inquire if I haven't gotten something within 2 months. Sometimes I never hear back, and I guess that's too bad. Won't be entering giveways on those blogs anymore... what else can you do?
I've won a giveaway and never gotten the book. But -- this is weird -- we have a big problem with that, here. Lots of books go missing. So, I never followed up.
